Gestalt- "The whole is greater than the sum of its parts."
The Gestalt theory is based on the laws of closure, continuation, similarity and proximity.
Elements of composition- point, line, shape, color, texture, space and value
Design is everywhere, it is a visual creation that has the purpose of attracting the viewer.
A piece of art can be symmetric or asymmetric but it needs to have balance so that it will appeal to the viewer.
Mondrian is a cubism style of design. It is simple but effective when used correctly.
conceptual, visual, relational and practical are all elements of design
conceptual elements- point, line, plane and volume. These elements are here but do not really exist.
visual elements- shape, size, color and texture. We can actually see these elements so that means they are the most important element in design.
relational elements- direction, position, space and gravity. The placement of objects in a design is dependent on this element.
practical elements- representation, meaning and function. This element emphasizes the main points in a design.
there are seven interrelationships between forms. detachment, touching, overlapping, interpretation, union, subtraction, intersection and coinciding.
There is a big difference in geometric and organic forms. Geometric forms are basic shapes and organic forms are more flowing and tend to be for natural.
In every design you try to achieve harmony and visual hierarchy to make an effective design. These are created through contrast.
Depending on your audience your design should have simplicity or complexity. The children it should be simple and for adults, more complex.
With different proportioned objects in your design you can make it chaotic or orderly.
With good use of structure in your design it will have rhythm.
I know there are a lot more key terms in art but these are the main points that I believe are important in creating a good piece of art or design.
